This gorgeous piece comes from the Ndebele of South Africa. A woman’s apron, specifically a Mapoto, for a newlywed. The colors and patterns represent the joining families. The two lower flaps represent the two houses joining together, and the center fringe capped with beads representing a wish for children. Painstakingly handcrafted as a special gift by one's in-laws.
