A group of Japanese bronze hand mirrors from the Edo, Meiji, and Taishō periods.
The Taishō example features large Kanji characters on a raised dotted ground. Two Meiji examples with raised scenes depicting flora and fauna, and the Edo example with a mythical beast running beneath a sakura branch.
Mirrors were once rare and expensive objects, taking on religious, magical and artistic functions. Even today, the mirror of goddess Amaterasu enshrined at Ise is the most sacred object in Japan.
Each displayed on a custom stand.
The mirrors measure 11.25, 10.5, 10, and 9.5 inches in height.
